FAYETTEVILLE, NC. -
The Methodist Monarchs fell short in the end of two well-played games against nationally ranked Christopher Newport Saturday afternoon.
In the first game of the day, Christopher Newport jumped on the scoreboard first scoring one run in the third inning. The game was held 1-0 until the top of the seventh when CNU racked up three hits to score two more runs.
Monarchs put in the great effort to battle back when Darci Martin led off the bottom of the seventh with a screaming line drive double to left center. Darci Martin advanced to third on a ground out by Rachel Chapman and then scored a run on a RBI single hit by Katie Scheller. The Monarchs could not continue their comeback, however, falling to the Captains 3-1.
By the end of the game, both teams were neck-in-neck in hits; each team with seven hits. Holte took the win for CNU, while Alex Bass received the loss for Methodist.
It was a strong defensive battle for the majority of game two, providing that both teams only allowed two hits in four innings. However, in the top of the fifth CNU jumped of the board rallying for six runs. During the next two innings the Monarchs worked to put something together including hits by Marcy Mckee, Katie Byrd, and Kimber Hall. While able to put runners in scoring position, the Monarchs could not make up the difference. CNU scored another run in the seventh and the game ended with the Captains on top, 7-0.
Kimber Hall led the Monarchs hitting 2-for-3 in the game. Haller obtained the win for CNU, while Alex Bass took the loss.
Methodist will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Greensboro College at 3:30 p.m.
