Methodist Softball Drops Two to Pride

Monarchs went to 10 innings in game one

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist and Greensboro battled through a USA South doubleheader on Tuesday night, but the Pride edged the Monarchs 8-2 and 9-1.

The first game was a battle through 10 innings, before Greensboro broke open for six runs in the tenth. The Pride scored first with a run in the first inning, but Methodist responded with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Kimber Hall doubled in the inning to help the Monarchs offensively.

Methodist held the 2-1 lead until the Pride snuck in a run in the top of the fifth to tie the game. With the score still tied after seven, the two teams went to extra innings. Neither team was able to score until Greensboro rattled off five hits in the 10th to earn the 8-2 win.

Alex Bass hit 1-for-2 in the game, but took the loss in the circle pitching four innings of relief. Candace Piner pitched six innings for the Monarchs.

Greensboro picked up where they left off in game two scoring three quick runs in the first inning. Methodist got on the board in the third after a lead-off single from Jordan Adams. Katie Byrd sacrificed Adams to second and Adams moved to third on a single from Kimber Hall. Darci Martin followed up with a single to score Adams. The Pride put together four hits for five runs in the sixth to move ahead 8-1 and added a run in the seventh to finish with the 9-1 win.

Byrd was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Monarchs offensively. Bass pitched 5.2 innings with two strikeouts. Chelsie Keene and Candace Piner finished in relief.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Averett.
