Monarchs Pick Up Split Versus Ferrum Baseball

FERRUM, Va. - The Methodist baseball team came from behind to win the first game 4-2 in a doubleheader with Ferrum, but lost 12-4 in the second game. 

Ferrum scored two quick runs in the second inning to take the early lead in game one, but Methodist came right back and tied the game in the top of the third. Two lead-off walks to Dustin Brown and Tripp Lancaster set up the Monarchs. Sergio Davis reached on a fielder's choice and both Lancaster and Davis scored on an error after Brandon Thigpen's single.

Neither team could break the tie until the top of the seventh when Thigpen's double scored Lancaster after he reached on a single. Methodist scored again in the eighth after Shawn Lovette reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Ferrum tried to rally in the ninth and scored a run, but the Monarchs held off the Panthers to earn the 4-3 win.

Thigpen finished 2-for-4 at the plate while Tyler Younger went 1-for-2. Tre' Britt pitched seven innings with four strikeouts for the win. Rusty White finished in relief to earn a save.

Methodist scored first in game two when Chris Perry had a two-RBI double to center in the second inning. Ferrum responded with four runs in the second after capitalizing on two Methodist errors on top of a triple. The Monarchs cut the lead to one in the third after a single by Trey Such scored Lancaster, but the Panthers came right back with a run in the third to lead 5-3.

Three Ferrum runs in the fifth and four in the sixth gave the Panthers the 12-3 lead. Kyle Williams sparked a Methodist rally in the ninth with a single. Lancaster reached second on an error that moved Williams to third and Davis' groundout scored Williams, but the Monarchs lost 12-4.

Younger hit 2-for-4 at the plate while Brian Inghram and Chris Perry went 1-for-3. Andrew Womble took the loss for Methodist having pitched two innings with two strikeouts. Michael Judge, Rett Lee, Brett Bially and Josh Ayers all entered in relief.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Purchase at 4 p.m.
