Monarchs Split With Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - The Methodist softball team dropped their first game 9-1, but came back to win the second game 4-2 over Averett University. 

In game one, Methodist scored the first run of the game after a lead-off single by Katie Byrd. Byrd moved to second on an error. Darci Martin came up with a two-out single to center to score Byrd for the 1-0 lead. Averett came right back and rattled off four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Cougars added two runs in the second, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to finish with the 9-1 win.

Byrd was 2-for-3 at the plate while Martin and Jody Eyler finished 1-for-2. Alex Bass took the loss in the circle scattering nine hits with five strikeouts.

The Monarchs regrouped in game two and took the early lead. Byrd led off with a single once again and moved to third on a sacrifice and error for Jordan Adams. Kimber Hall grounded out, but scored Byrd and Eyler singled to score Adams for the 2-0 lead. Methodist scored another run in the third after a lead-off double by Adams and sacrifices from Hall and Martin. Averett got on the board in the fourth with a solo home run to cut the lead to two. The Cougars drove another one out for a home run in the fifth, but Methodist added an insurance run in the seventh securing the 4-2 win.

Byrd and Eyler went 3-for-4 at the plate. Alex Bass hit 2-for-4. Candace Piner pitched the complete game win scattering nine hits.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Meredith at 5 p.m.
