FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist women's tennis team played two matches on Saturday in two different cities and earned two wins, both with a score of 9-0.
The Monarchs kept their winning ways giving up just one game through the course of the two matches. Methodist opened the day with a match at Ferrum, completely shutting out the competition.
Rachel Purser and
Katherine Meindl combined in doubles at number one and
Stacey Brooks and
Hillary Petruska played number two.
Lauryn Justice and
Adrinne Beaver played number three and all three teams won 8-0.
Singles was more of the same as
Kaitlin Flaherty,
Laura Baker,
Dana Powell,
Kelli Shelton, Petruska and
Jessica Broadwell each won 6-0, 6-0. Eleven players contributed to the shutout for Methodist.
The team packed up and headed south to Greensboro, N.C. for another conference match, this time with Mary Baldwin College. Originally scheduled for Sunday, the two teams moved it indoors to get it in despite heavy rain in the area. A number of Methodist parents made the trip and were on hand for recognition of senior
Kaitlin Flaherty. Fittingly enough, Flaherty came through with her 68th career singles win, a new school record surpassing former teammate Shannon Vivian.
The Monarchs earned three more shutouts in doubles at 8-0. Baker and Powell played at number one while Petruska and Shelton played number two. Justice and
Lindsie Bentham played at number three. The singles teams combined for another standout performance. Flaherty won 6-0, 6-0 at number one and Meindl won 6-0, 6-0 at number two. Purser won 6-0, 6-0 at number three and Brooks won 6-0, 6-0 at number four. Beaver won 6-1, 6-0 at number five and
Jessica Broadwell earned the 6-0, 6-0 win at number six.
