BURLINGTON, N.C. - No. 3 seed Methodist University earned a 3-0 shutout in the second game of the USA South Tournament over No. 6 N.C. Wesleyan College.
Methodist (25-11) took the early lead with a run in the second after a lead-off double from
Shawn Lovette. Lovette stole third and scored on
Tripp Lancaster's bunt single for the 1-0 advantage.
The Bishops (13-19-1) picked up four hits in the game, but could not get a run across. The Monarchs added two insurance runs in the seventh inning. Lancaster led off with a double and
Sergio Davis was hit by a pitch to reach first.
Brandon Thigpen set up the sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, but after an error both Lancaster and Davis scored for the 3-0 lead.
Lancaster finished 3-for-5 at the plate while
Trey Such went 2-for-3 and and Lovette was 2-for-4.
Tre' Britt pitched eight scoreless innings scattering four hits for the win.
Josh Ayers pitched the ninth for the save.
Zach Alexander, Tyler Clark, and Jose Parra went 1-for-3 for the Bishops. Andrew Webb pitched the complete game with four strikeouts.
Methodist will face the winner of No. 2 Christopher Newport and No. 7 Ferrum on Friday at 10 a.m. at Burlington Athletic Stadium. N.C. Wesleyan will take on the loser at Elon at 9 a.m.
