Methodist Rallies to Eliminate Bishops

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Third-seeded Methodist University edged No. 6 seed N.C. Wesleyan College 12-8 in a USA South Conference Tournament elimination slugfest on Friday evening at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

Methodist (26-12) advances to play No. 4 seed Averett University in a game scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. The loss ends N.C. Wesleyan's run in the double-elimination tournament.

N.C. Wesleyan (14-20-1), which stayed alive earlier in the day with a morning win over Ferrum College, jumped in front with a five-run second inning. Methodist, which lost to Christopher Newport University earlier in the afternoon, answered with four runs in the top of the third. It was a sign of things to come.

Methodist took an 8-4 lead in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally. Three runs came home on Brandon Thigpen's bases-clearing double deep into right-center.

After the Bishops' got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, Methodist tacked on three more runs to go in front 11-6.

Methodist allowed two more N.C. Wesleyan runs to score, but it wasn't enough.

Josh Ayers earned the win in relief for the Monarchs, and Rusty White got the save.
