BURLINGTON, N.C. — Second-seeded Christopher Newport University stayed unbeaten in the USA South Conference Tournament with a 12-0 win over No. 3 seed Methodist University in seven innings at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

Christopher Newport (33-4) advances to play later Friday at 8 p.m. against the winner between No. 1 seed Shenandoah University and No. 4 seed Averett University.

The Captains pounded out 11 hits, including a solo homer by Billy Steel and a two-run blast by Matt Shoemaker. Methodist (25-12) also helped Christopher Newport. The Monarchs' pitching staff allowed nine walks, including three with the bases loaded.

Captains starter Greg Goldsmith gave up just three hits, with two coming in the sixth inning when Methodist had its best opportunity to break onto the scoreboard. The Monarchs had runners on second and third with one out but couldn't get them home.

Methodist will be back in action against No. 6 N.C. Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
