BURLINGTON, N.C. — Third-seeded Methodist University handed No. 4 seed Averett University a 9-1 loss, eliminating the Cougars from the USA South Conference Tournament on Saturday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

Methodist (27-12) advances to play top seed Shenandoah University at noon on Sunday for the right to face No. 2 seed Christopher Newport University for the championship.

Tripp Lancaster got Methodist's offense going with a one-out triple to left-center field in the third inning, and he scored on Sergio Davis's RBI single to right field. The Monarchs loaded the bases, and Shawn Lovette drew a walk to bring in Davis to put Methodist ahead 2-0.

Methodist struck again in the fifth inning, this time with the long ball. Brandon Thigpen and Trey Such belted back-to-back solo home runs as part of a three-run inning to take a 5-0 lead. Such homered his next time at-bat an inning later, lining a two-run homer for another three-run Methodist inning.

Averett (22-19) plated its only run the seventh inning on James Carter's RBI double to left-center, but Methodist got that run back in the bottom half of the inning.

Methodist starter Chris Perry allowed just four hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work, and Brett Bially pitched two scoreless innings of relief to secure the win.

Tyler Long took the loss, allowing four runs with seven strikeouts and four walks in 4.1 innings.
