FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team used a 10-run fourth inning to blow past N.C. Wesleyan 16-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Trey Such gave the Monarchs the early lead with a solo shot to right field in the second inning. The Bishops tied the game in the top of the third after a sacrifice bunt with runners on first and third. N.C. Wesleyan took the lead in the fourth with two hits, but Methodist regained the lead in the bottom of the inning.
The Monarchs put together seven hits in the inning and capitalized on two defensive errors for the ten-spot.
Sergio Davis had a two-RBI single during the rally and Such capped off the scoring with a three-run home run back to right field for the 11-2 advantage.
The Bishops battled for two runs in the fifth, but Methodist pitcher
Tre' Britt shut them down offensively for the remainder of the game. The Monarchs scored two runs in the sixth to move ahead 13-4 before wrapping things up in the seventh.
Tripp Lancaster loaded the bases with a walk and
Sergio Davis reached on a fielder's choice that would score
Tyler Younger and
Dustin Brown.
Brandon Thigpen doubled to left and scored Lancaster. The 12-run lead ended the game by conference policy.
Such finished 3-for-3 with five RBI and Thigpen went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Davis was 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Britt pitched the complete game win scattering nine hits with three strikeouts.
The Monarchs will host N.C. Wesleyan in the second game of the weekend series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
