FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - After three and a half scoreless innings, Methodist struck first and finished with the 7-2 win over N.C. Wesleyan College.
Brandon Thigpen and
Trey Such started things off in the fourth with back-to-back singles.
Brian Inghram followed up with a bunt single that allowed Thigpen to score on a throwing error at first. N.C. Wesleyan pitcher Max Knowles tried to pick off Inghram at first, but the throw went to the fence allowing Such to score and advancing Inghram to third. Inghram scored the third run of the game on a sacrifice bunt by
Shawn Lovette.
The Monarchs took the 6-0 lead in the fifth inning
Tripp Lancaster and Thigpen singled and
Trey Such hit a blast to center field for a three-run home run. The Bishops countered with two runs in the top of the sixth on four hits, but Methodist came right back with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Tyler Younger sparked a two-out rally with a single and
Dustin Brown kept it going with another single. Lancaster singled through the left side to score Younger for the 7-2 lead.
Andrew Womble pitched six innings scattering eight hits for the win.
Josh Ayers entered in relief and pitched three scoreless innings with two strikeouts and one hit for a save.
Lancaster was 3-for-4 at the plate with a RBI. Such finished 2-for-4 with three RBI while Thigpen and Inghram also went 2-for-4.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Wednesday when they travle to Virginia Wesleyan.
