NORFOLK, Va. - Methodist took the lead in both games, but Virginia Wesleyan came from behind to win 3-1 and 13-10.
After three scoreless innings,
Jordan Adams led off the fourth with a single and moved to second on the sacrifice by
Kimber Hall. Adams scored the first run of the game on a single from
Jody Eyler. The Monarchs held the 1-0 lead until the Marlins broke through for three runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Hall went 1-for-2 at the plate while Adams, Eyler and
Marcy McKee were 1-for-3.
Alex Bass took the loss in relief.
Candace Piner went 5.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Methodist took the early lead again in game two when they scored two runs in the second inning on RBI from
Katie Byrd and
Jordan Adams. Virginia Wesleyan came back and took the lead in the third inning with four runs in the third inning capitalizing on two hits and a defensive error. Methodist came back with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Marlins' bats caught fire in the fourth inning as they rattled off nine hits for nine runs for the 13-2 advantage.
The Monarchs kept battling as they came back with four runs in the fifth inning. Methodist capitalized on three walks along with timely hits from
Gabrielle Howard and Adams to cut the lead to six.
Rachel Chapman kept the rally going in the sixth with a two-out single.
Katie Scheller reached on an error and Howard followed up with a double.
Katie Byrd kept the pressure on with a single to move the Monarchs within three runs, but Virginia Wesleyan recorded the final out to hold on for the 13-10 win.
Howard was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Chapman and Adams went 2-for-4.
Alex Bass pitched 3.1 innings to take the loss with three strikeouts.
Chelsie Keene and
Candace Piner pitched in relief.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Friday when they host Mary Baldwin at 3 p.m.
