FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday with a split against Shenandoah University. The Hornets edged Methodist 5-3 in extra innings in game one, but the Monarchs came back to earn a 4-0 shutout in game two.
Shenandoah had bases loaded in the top of the second inning, but Methodist got out of the inning and came back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Darci Martin was hit by a pitch and scored on
Jody Eyler's double down the left field line.
The Hornets tied the game in the fifth inning when Cat Pruiett led off with a single and moved around the bases before scoring on a sacrifice fly. Neither team could break the tie sending the game to extra innings. Shenandoah opened the eighth with two runs on four hits, but Methodist responded.
Gabrielle Howard started on second and scored on
Katie Byrd's double to right field. Byrd stole third and scored on Jordan Adam's sacrifice fly to tie the game. Shenandoah put together two hits in the ninth to finish with the 5-3 win.
The Monarchs finished with just three hits from Byrd, Eyler and
Alex Bass.
Candace Piner pitched eight innings scattering 11 hits with a strikeout. Bass pitched the final inning to take the loss.
The first two innings of game two were scoreless, but Methodist had all the offense they would need in the third inning stringing together five hits for four runs.
Rebecca Harlan started things off with a walk and moved to second on a single from Byrd.
Jordan Adams singled to load the bases and
Kimber Hall blasted a double to left center to clear the bases.
Darci Martin and
Rachel Chapman followed up with singles to score Hall for the 4-0 lead. Neither team scored during the remaining innings as Methodist finished with the shutout.
Hall went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the team. Adams and Martin were 2-for-3.
Alex Bass pitched the complete game shutout giving up just two hits with three strikeouts.
Methodist will kick off the USA South Tournament on Friday in Burlington, N.C. The tournament seedings will be announced on Sunday.
