Women's Tennis Earns Conference Championship

Monarchs finish the regular season undefeated in conference play

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Methodist women's tennis team earned their fourth consecutive conference title on Saturday by defeating Christopher Newport 9-0. 

Methodist started with the 3-0 lead after doubles. Kaitlin Flaherty and Katherine Meindl won 8-5 at number one and Dana Powell and Rachel Purser won 8-2 at number two. Stacey Brooks and Laura Baker won 8-4 at number three.

The Monarchs won all six singles matches to finish with the shutout. Flaherty dropped her first set but came back to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 at number one. Meindl won 6-3, 6-4 at number two and Purser won 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 at number three. Baker won 6-0, 6-2 at number four and Powell won 6-1, 6-1 at number five. Kelli Shelton finished with the 6-4, 6-0 win at number six.

The Monarchs have earned the number one seed in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. They will face the winner of Peace and Mary Baldwin who play the first round on Tuesday.
