Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist men's soccer team moved to 11-2-1 on the season with a 3-0 win over Piedmont College on Sunday afternoon.

Playing on senior day, the Monarchs stifled the Lions, allowing just one shot on the day, as senior goalkeeper Pat Hamel earned his second shutout of the season.

The Monarchs need fewer than 11 minutes to take an early 1-0 lead as junior Hank Toebner was the beneficiary of two great passes from junior Eric McGinnis and freshman Anders Petersen, who set up Toebner deep in the PC penalty area for the game's first goal at the 10:35 mark.

It appeared that that would be the score heading into the break until junior Frank Barone found himself on the end of a superb pass across the mouth of the Piedmont goal by sophomore Sean MacDonald. Barone then rifled a shot past the Lions' Kenneth Hearn with just 2.6 seconds remaining in the first period for a 2-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, it was sophomore Eirik Nordseth who scored unassisted at the 76:23 mark for the game's final goal.

On the day, the Monarchs outshot Piedmont 17-1 and earned six corner kicks to just one for the Lions. Hamel, who earned his first career shutout in the season-opening win over Wooster (4-0), was not forced to make a save in earning his second shutout. Hearn made three saves for the Lions.

Following the game, Methodist took a moment to honor Hamel, senior Shane Davis and Miguel Flores, a junior who is slated to graduate early, for their contributions to the Monarch soccer program.

The Monarchs are off until Saturday when they hit the road to take on Ferrum at 2:30 pm.
