Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --
Eirik Nordseth scored a pair of goals and the Monarchs recorded their fifth shutout in the month of October as the Methodist men's soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the USA South Conference Tournament with a 3-0 win over Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex.
The Monarchs improved to 14-2-2 on the season with the win while Ferrum wraps up its 2012 campaign at 7-9-3.
Nordseth scored his first goal at the 24:17 mark of the opening period, following a pass from
Anders Petersen to put MU up 1-0. Despite outshooting Ferrum, 15-1, in the opening 45 minutes, the Monarchs were unable to add to their lead and took that 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half,
Alec Baulch provided Methodist a 2-0 cushion when he collected a bouncing ball about seven yards out and rifled a shot past Ferrum's Justin Robinson for his first collegiate goal.
Nordseth then made it 3-0 when he converted a penalty kick at the 73:09 mark for his 16th goal of the season. For the game, the Monarchs outshot Ferrum, 20-3, and earned six corner kicks to just one for the Panthers.
Robinson played all 90:00 in goal for FC and made seven saves. Pat Hamel also played the duration in goal and was not forced into making a save as the MU back line kept Ferrum from mounting much of a threat.
With the win, Methodist will take on the winner of tomorrow's Averett vs. Maryville match on Nov. 2 at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Virginia at either 12:00 pm or 2:30 pm.
