FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Virginia Wesleyan scored first and came from behind to earn the 8-4 win over Methodist.
The Marlins (2-5) scored first in the top of the first on an unearned run. Methodist came right back and took the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Cody Molosky singled and stole second before moving to third on
Brandon Thigpen's single.
Trey Such hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Molosky and
Tyler Younger hit a huge double to right to score Thigpen and give Methodist the 2-1 lead.
Neither team tallied a run in the second, but Virginia Wesleyan tacked on four runs in the third after putting together three hits and capitalizing on two Methodist errors. The Monarchs tried to rally in the bottom of the inning with doubles from Younger and
Matt Jack, but trailed 5-3 after three innings.
Virginia Wesleyan added a run in the fifth and scored two in the eighth to lead 8-3.
Brian Armstrong tried to get Methodist going with a triple down the right field line in the bottom of the eighth. Armstrong scored on
Matt Quick's groundout, but the Marlins retired the next batter to hold the lead. Thigpen singled to start the ninth and Younger reached on an error, but both runners were left stranded giving Virginia Wesleyan the 8-4 win.
Armstrong went 3-for-4 on the day while Younger was 3-for-5 and Thigpen was 2-for-5. Methodist out hit the Marlins 12-10, but finished with four errors on the day.
Michael Inman pitched three innings scattering five hits while
Dylan Moore went two innings and
Michael Judge,
Rett Lee,
Josh Ayers and
Rusty White finished in relief with an inning apiece.
Methodist will be back in action this weekend with an adjusted schedule at Piedmont. The games have been pushed back a day with the first game against Piedmont scheduled for Saturday.
