Fayetteville, N.C. - The Methodist University baseball team began its 2012 campaign with an excellent start, sweeping an opening day doubleheader against visiting Roanoke College by the scores of 11-0 and 4-2.

Outfielders Matt Quick and Cody Molosky led the Monarch offense, going 3-for-6 and 4-for-7 from the place, respectively. Chris Perry and Andrew Womble picked up the victories on mound.

After scoring two runs in each of the first two innings of game one, the Monarch offense exploded in the fifth inning, scoring five runs as 10 hitters entered the batter's box in the inning. The outburst was highlighted by a three-run homer by first baseman Tyler Younger, who led all players with three RBI on the afternoon. For the game, the Monarchs would register 13 hits with Quick, Younger, Molosky, Trey Such and David Lutz with multi-hit games.

Methodist got the scoring started in the first inning when Quick scored off of a Brandon Thigpen single. Thigpen would score when Such singled later in the inning. That would be all the scoring Perry would need to secure the victory. Perry would go on to throw six no-hit innings. Perry walked no batters while striking out eight Maroons before Josh Clarke would finish the game with one scoreless inning.

In game two, Methodist's offense picked up where it left off, scoring two runs in the first inning. Quick would steal home for the first run with Such later crossing the plate when Dustin Brown was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Later in the third, the Monarchs would add another run, this time Such scoring off a double by Chris Power.

The Maroons would make it interesting late in the seven-inning contest with two runs in the sixth. Jacob Clifton would drive in two runs with the bases loaded off of Womble. Methodist would respond by adding a needed insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Molosky singled home Power for the fourth and final tally.

Womble would earn the victory after allowing two runs on seven hits through six innings. Womble would strike out eight Maroons while walking no batters. Josh Ayers would pitch a perfect seventh inning to close out the game to earn the save.

Methodist and Roanoke will complete the three-game series Sunday afternoon. First pitch will be at 1 p.m.
