No. 3 CNU Powers Past Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - No. 3 Christopher Newport bounced back on Sunday earning a 13-0 shutout over the Methodist baseball team.

The Captains started things off with a home run and added another run on a walk and single to lead 2-0 early. CNU added three runs in the second, third and fourth innings to jump out to the 11-0 lead.

Methodist's Tyler Younger drew the walk in the second and Steven Kirby reached on an error in the third, but both were left stranded. Trey Such drew the walk in the fourth before earning the Monarchs' first hit in the sixth with a single to left field. Unable to tally a run, the Captains added a two-run home run in the ninth to finish with the 13-0 shutout.

Such finished 1-for-3 for the Monarchs with only hit. Andrew Womble threw the first inning giving up two hits with one strikeout. Michael Inman, Rett Lee, Josh Clarke, Josh Ayers and Reid Berry pitched in relief. Ayers had three strikeouts in the eighth, with all three Captains caught looking.

Greg Goldsmith pitched seven scoreless innings for CNU to earn the win. Richard Lindsay and and Ryan Fleischmann finished in relief.

Methodist will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan.
