VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan College finished with a sweep over the Monarchs this season after taking the 4-3 win on Wednesday. The game had been postponed Tuesday, but the two teams met on Wednesday in a rescheduled contest.
The Monarchs (13-10) took the early lead in the top of the first after
Matt Quick drew the lead-off walk.
Brian Armstrong sacrificed him to second and
Trey Such drew another walk.
Brandon Thigpen picked up a RBI with a single up the middle to score Quick. Methodist added a run in the fourth when
Tyler Younger led off with a double.
Dustin Brown sacrificed him to third, but Younger was ruled out on
Cody Molosky's fielder's choice. Molosky took Younger's place after stealing second and third and scoring on
Chris Power's single.
Virginia Wesleyan (3-9) tied the game in the fifth with a lead-off home run and two singles. Methodist came back and regained the lead in the sixth when Younger was hit by a pitch and moved around the bases before scoring an unearned run. The Marlins came back and tied the game at three in the bottom of the sixth with two singles and took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh with two singles.
Dustin Brown singled in the eighth, but was left stranded and the Monarchs were without a base runner in the ninth leaving Virginia Wesleyan with the 4-3 win.
Brown went 1-for-2 at the plate while Such, Younger and Power went 1-for-3.
Josh Ayers went five innings on the mound scattering five hits with one strikeout.
Michael Inman,
Rett Lee and
Andrew Womble each pitched an inning of relief. Lee moves to 2-3 on the season with the loss.
Justin Payne picked up his first win for Virginia Wesleyan in relief.
Methodist will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Averett University for their third USA South Athletic Conference weekend series.
