Monarchs Open USA South Play With a Sweep

Jessica Farmer earned a win and a save in 10.2 innings

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team opened USA South action on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep over Peace College with 6-0 and 6-5 wins.

Methodist came out strong in the first game and led 3-0 after the first inning. Jordan Adams was hit by a pitch and Megan Lee walked before both runners scored on Lindsay Tippett's single and a defensive error. Ally Griffin had a single up the middle and Tippett came around to score for the 3-0 lead. The Monarchs added a run in the second when Adams singled and stole second before moving to third on Megan Lee's single and scored on a wild pitch. Tippett sparked a third inning rally with a single through the right side. Katie Byrd and Marcy McKee singled to load the bases and Tippett scored on Alex Winter's groundout. Sarah Stapleton walked to load the bases again and Adams drew the bases loaded walk for the 6-0 lead. The Monarchs came up empty in the final three innings, but held on for the 6-0 shutout.

Tippett was 2-for-3 at the plate while Adams and Stapleton were 1-for-2. Jessica Farmer pitched five innings scattering six hits with three strikeouts. Ashley Shingleton finished in relief.

Both teams each scored a run in the first inning to knot the game at one. Methodist's Jordan Adams led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on Krista Zentner's single back to the pitcher. Neither team could tally a run for the next four innings before Peace broke it open in the sixth. The Pacers started things off reaching on an error and put together five hits to score four runs and lead 5-1. The Monarchs came right back and rattled off some hits of their own in the bottom of the sixth.

Byrd drew the lead-off walk and Griffin singled to right. McKee walked to load the bases and Byrd scored on a wild pitch. Stapleton had a huge double down the left field line to score pinch runner Sarah Chapman and McKee scored on Adam's groundout to cut the lead to one. Lee came right back with a single for Stapleton to score the tying run bringing Krista Zentner to the plate. Zentner singled to the shortstop and Lee was able to sneak around and score while the Pacers were going for Zentner at first. Peace had three runners on in the top of the seventh, but Tippett caught the final out stretching out in foul territory along the first base line.

Zentner was 2-for-4 at the plate and Stapleton went 2-for-2. Farmer pitched the first five innings before Tippett and Shingleton entered in relief. Shingleton earned the win and Farmer came back in to finish the seventh and earn a save with seven strikeouts and just three hits.

The Monarchs will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Mary Baldwin College and Shenandoah University.
