STAUNTON, Va. - The Methodist softball team took two over Mary Baldwin College to move to 4-0 in the USA South Athletic Conference.
The Monarchs slowly chipped away at the Squirrels in game one before earning the 10-1 win. Methodist broke the game open in the second inning with hits from
Erica Bradley,
Sarah Stapleton and
Jordan Adams to go along with three defensive errors for the 3-0 lead.
Katie Byrd kept things going in the third when she led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Lindsay Tippett had a RBI single in the fourth and the Monarchs added three runs in the fifth for the 8-0 advantage.
Mary Baldwin got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a run, but the Monarchs came back with two runs in the seventh with RBI from Krista Zentnerand
Rachel Chapman to secure the 10-1 win.
Adams finished 3-for-5 at the plate. Byrd, Bradley and Stapleton were 2-for-3 while Zentner was 2-for-4.
Kayla Malone pitched four scoreless innings for the win while Stapleton finished in relief.
Mary Baldwin struck first in game two with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Methodist came right back to regain the lead with three runs in the top of the second.
Alex Winters and Stapleton picked up hits to go along with two errors. The Monarchs took advantage of two more errors in the third along with a lead-off single by
Marcy McKee to lead 5-2. Methodist added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth before the Squirrels used a three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth to trim the lead to 8-5.
The Methodist offense rattled off five runs in the top of the seventh thanks in part to a three RBI double from
Annie Zaremski. Mary Baldwin put together four hits for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Monarchs held on for the 13-8 win.
Adams, Byrd and McKee were 2-for-4 at the plate and
Katie Scheller went 2-for-5. Zaremski finished with four RBI.
Jessica Farmer pitched four innings to earn the win with six strikeouts.
Ashley Shingleton finished in relief.
Methodist will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. at noon.
