Averett Holds On For 3-2 Win Over Methodist

DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University went ahead 3-0 in the first inning and held the Monarchs off to earn the 3-2 win.

Averett's first two batters reached on a walk and a hit by pitch and the Cougars put together three hits in the inning to take the 3-0 early lead. Methodist got things going in the fourth after Tyler Younger was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Chris Power sacrificed Younger to third before Younger scored on Steven Kirby's sacrifice fly. Younger scored again in the sixth after a lead-off double. Power notched another sacrifice and Younger scored on Dustin Brown's single through the left side. Methodist had a base runner in the seventh and Matt Quick drew the two-out walk in the ninth, but Averett held on for the win.

Quick finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Trey Such, Younger, Power and Brown had one hit apiece.

Josh Ayers pitched one inning to take the loss. Josh Clarke, Michael Inman, Rett Lee and Andrew Wombled combined for seven scoreless innings of relief.

Methodist will be back in action at Armstrong-Shelley on Tuesday when they host North Central at 4 p.m.
