FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team was in a hole early, but came back with seven runs in the sixth to upend Salem 7-5 on Sunday.

Salem went ahead early with a run in the third and fourth to lead 2-0. The Spirits added two unearned runs in the sixth for the 4-0 advantage. Methodist rallied in the sixth sparked by a single from Ally Griffin. Erica Bradley, Marcy McKee, Kirsten Markow and Sarah Stapleton added singles and the Monarchs capitalized on two defensive errors. It started to downpour in the middle of the inning and Methodist was able to take advantage of wild pitches as they went ahead 7-4. Salem scored one run in the top of the seventh, but the Monarchs held on to win 7-5.

Markow and Jordan Adams went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Methodist.

Jessica Farmer pitched the complete game scattering four hits for one earned run with six trikeouts.

Both teams started game two, but after a strong thunderstorm in the area, the game was canceled in the second inning.

Methodist will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Christopher Newport University for a rescheduled doubleheader.
