NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 15th ranked Christopher Newport Captains snapped Methodist's nine-game winning streak taking 8-0 and 6-0 wins over the Monarchs.
Methodist's
Jordan Adams led off with a single and stole second before moving to third on
Krista Zentner's fly out, but was left stranded. The Captains came back with a run in the bottom of the first on two doubles.
Lindsay Tippett led off the second with a single and was sacrificed to second, but Christopher Newport retired the next two batters to maintain their lead. CNU came back with four runs on two hits in the second and added a run in the third. The Captains finished it off with two runs on three hits in the fifth to win 8-0.
Adams and Tippett went 1-for-2 in the game with the Monarchs' only hits.
Jessica Farmer pitched two innings while
Kayla Malone and
Ashley Shingleton finished in relief.
Adams tried to get the Monarchs going in game two with a lead-off walk and she stole second.
Megan Lee singled, but Adams was out on a fielder's choice and Methodist could not get on the board. CNU loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but Malone forced a pop up to get out of the jam. Methodist came back and loaded the bases in the third with singles from Lee and
Krista Zentner to go along with
Ally Griffin's advance on a fielder's choice where all runners were safe.
Christopher Newport capitalized on a defensive error in the third to go ahead 3-0. Methodist drew two walks in the fourth, but it was CNU who added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to earn the 6-0 win.
Lee led the Monarchs hitting 2-for-4. Zentner and
Marcy McKee added the other two Methodist hits.
Kayla Malone pitched the complete game scattering 12 hits for three earned runs.
Methodist will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Greensboro College.
