FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Considering the match started more than a week ago, it was one of the longer matches in Methodist women's tennis history, but after rain postponed last Wednesday's match, Methodist and Meredith resumed play on Thursday. The Monarchs outlasted Meredith for the 6-3 win to remain undefeated in the USA South Athletic Conference.
Methodist took a 3-0 lead into singles after
sweeping doubles last week. The two regionally ranked teams entered the match undefeated in the conference and Meredith closed the gap early. Methodist's
Katherine Meindl dropped the first singles match 6-1, 6-1 and
Kelli Shelton lost 6-4, 6-0 at number five for Meredith to cut the lead to one.
Laura Baker won 6-0, 6-1 at number three before
Rachel Purser clinched the match at number two singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Lauryn Justice lost 6-4, 6-4 at number six before
Dana Powell finished up with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win at number four.
The Monarchs will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Raleigh to take on Southern Virginia in a rescheduled match from earlier this season.
