FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball faced an early deficit for the second time this week, but came from behind once again to earn the 9-5 win over Immaculata University.
The Mighty Macs scored two unearned runs in the first to lead 2-0 before the Monarchs got on the board with a run in the third.
Steven Kirby led off with a triple and
Matt Quick hit the RBI single up the middle. Immaculata's Brent Knazek homered in the fourth while the Monarchs scored one of their own in the bottom of the inning, still trailing 3-2.
Immaculata strung together three hits and took advantage of a Methodist error to go ahead 5-2 in the sixth. The Monarchs came up empty in the bottom of the inning, but rallied in the seventh. Quick, Such and Thigpen were all walked to load the bases and
Tyler Younger hit the two-out triple over the right fielder's head to tie the game at five.
Dustin Brown singled to score Younger and the Monarchs led 6-5. In the eighth inning,
David Lutz was hit by a pitch and
Matt Quick reached on a fielder's choice where Lutz was safe to set up a three-run home run from Such. The bomb over the fence in left field marked Such's 33rd in his career, tying the Methodist record for career home runs. The Monarchs finished off with the 9-5 win.
Quick was 2-for-3 with a RBI and Younger was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Such was 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Michael Judge went five innings on the mound giving up just three hits with four strikeouts.
Greg Scassera and
Reid Berry entered in relief before
Rusty White went 2.2 innings to get the win.
Andrew Womble finished the ninth with two strikeouts.
Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they host No. 3 Christopher Newport University at 1 p.m.
