FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team notched their first conference sweep of the season with a 5-4 win over Ferrum College in 10 innings on Sunday.
Ferrum (19-10, 5-5) jumped out to the early lead with a run in the third and three runs in the fourth to lead 4-0. Methodist (17-15, 4-6) got on the board in the fifth inning when
Chris Power drew the lead-off walk.
Dustin Brown singled through the left side and both runners advanced on a groundout to set up
Matt Quick's two-RBI single up the middle.
Trey Such led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk, but was ruled out on
Brandon Thigpen's fielder's choice.
Tyler Younger singled to right and Thigpen was able to move to third on
Chris Power's fly out to right. Brown singled to left to score Thigpen and cut the Ferurm lead to one.
Methodist kept the rally going with a run in the seventh after
Steven Kirby drew the lead-off walk, but was out on
Brian Armstrong's fielder's choice. Such singled to left to advance Armstrong and Thigpen singled to score Armstrong for the game-tying run. Ferrum loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, but reliever
Rusty White came on to get the final out. The Monarchs had runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning, but the Panthers recorded a double play to get out of the inning.
Both teams tallied a hit apiece in the ninth, but left the runners stranded to send the game to extra innings. The Monarchs retired the first three Ferrum batters in the top of the 10th before loading the bases in the bottom of the inning. Younger, Power and
David Lutz all picked up singles to load the bases with no outs.
Cody Molosky's fly ball to right was too shallow to send Younger and Younger was out on
Steven Kirby's fielder's choice to bring up
Matt Quick with two outs and bases loaded. After taking the first strike and fouling a few off, Quick drilled one between the first and second baseman to score Power for the game-winning run.
Quick finished 2-for-5 with three RBI on the day. Brown and Such went 2-for-3 at the plate and Younger was 2-for-5.
Michael Judge went 3.1 innings on the mound with three strikeouts while
Josh Ayers and
Andrew Womble pitched in relief before White came on to pick up the win. White threw 2.1 innings giving up one hit with one strikeout.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Lynchburg College for a 4 p.m. start.
