GREENSBORO, N.C. - Originally scheduled as the season opener, Methodist and Guilford College met six weeks later with the Quakers winning the first 6-3 before the Monarchs came back to win the second game 7-6.
Guilford jumped out to the early lead in game one with four runs in the first three innings. Methodist cut the lead to one with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Katie Byrd sparked the rally with a single to right.
Ally Griffin singled and Byrd scored on
Sarah Stapleton's single.
Jordan Adams came through with a two-RBI single up the middle. The Quakers responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth for the 6-3 lead. Griffin drew a walk in the sixth, but she would be the only Methodist base runner through the final three innings as Guilford finished with the 6-3 win.
Megan Lee went 2-for-4 in the game and Griffin was 1-for-2.
Jessica Farmer went 4.1 innings to take the loss with 10 hits and three strikeouts.
Ashley Shingleton finished in relief.
It was Methodist who took control early in the second game opening things up in the second inning.
Marcy McKee led off with a single and Griffin reached on an error after she laid down the sacrifice bunt.
Lindsay Tippett singled to score McKee.
Krista Zentner reached on a fielder's choice and Adams had a two-RBI double to score Tippett and Zentner. Lee added a single to left to score Adams for the 4-0 advantage. The Monarchs added two runs in the third capitalizing on two errors to go along with a McKee double and Stapleton single.
Guilford got on the board with two runs in the fourth before Tippett got things going in the fifth with a double to left center.
Raevin Harvey entered to pinch run and moved to third on Zentner's single before scoring on Stapleton's sacrifice fly. Harvey's run would be the eventual game-winning run as the Quakers rallied with three runs in the fifth and a run in the seventh, but the Monarchs held on to win 7-6.
Tippett and Lee went 2-for-3 in the game while Adams and McKee were 2-for-4.
Kayla Malone pitched 6.1 innings to earn the win while
Jessica Farmer finished in relief to earn her the save.
Methodist will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Meredith College for a USA South doubleheader.
