Methodist Softball Splits at USA South Tournament

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Methodist took a 5-1 loss to Greensboro College in their first game of the day, but came back and won 11-3 over Mary Baldwin.

Greensboro put two on the board in the third on an RBI single by Brittany Evans and fielder's choice by Heather Nellis. The Pride had already threatened in the second, leaving the bases loaded without a run.  Greensboro looked to blow the game open in the fourth, loading the bases again, but with nothing to show.

The Pride finally broke through again in the fifth with three runs to push the lead to 5-0.  Hayley Hicks, Kelsey Burkett and Reihle Kash all provided RBI base hits.Methodist would record its only run of the afternoon on the final play of the game. 

Hannah Pennell (4-9) earned the win with 3.2 innings of work.  Jessica Farmer (12-9) took the loss for the Monarchs. 

Methodist came back and eliminated Mary Baldwin on Friday afternoon by a final score of 11-3.  Methodist will advance to face No. 9 North Carolina Wesleyan at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The Monarchs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the first behind four hits and two Fighting Squirrel errors.  Katie Byrd, Ally Griffin and Erica Bradley each recorded RBI singles in the frame.

Mary Baldwin fought back in the bottom of the inning with two runs to cut the deficit to 4-2.  Latoya Diggs scored the first run on an error and Rebecca Parramore finished out the scoring with a single to center. Methodist added three runs in the third to extend the advantage to 7-2 with the help of two bases loaded walks.  Parramore knocked home the final run of the game for the Fighting Squirrels on an infield single in the bottom of the third.

The Monarchs tacked on an insurance run in both the fourth and fifth innings to go up 9-3 and closed it out with two runs in the ninth.
Lindsay Tippett notched a game high three hits to go along with two RBI to lead the 12 hit Methodist attack.  Parramore paced Mary Baldwin with two hits and two RBI.

Kayla Malone earned the victory in six solid innings in the circle.  Jessica Hogle started for the Fighting Squirrels and took the loss in one inning of work.
