RALEIGH, N.C. - Methodist made admirable comebacks in both games, but it was Meredith who finished with the sweep taking 6-5 and 4-3 wins over the Monarchs on Tuesday.
Methodist scored first in game one, but Meredith came back and took the lead.
Jordan Adams started things off for the Monarchs with a single in the third, but was out on
Megan Lee's fielder's choice.
Marcy McKee fouled out to the catcher, but Lee took advantage of the diving catch to advance to second.
Lindsay Tippett's single to right scored Lee for the first run of the game. The Angels came back with three runs in the bottom of the third after taking advantage of two early hit batters and two walks to go along with two hits.
After adding an unearned run in the fourth, Meredith led 4-1. The Monarchs cut the lead to two in the top of the fifth after another Adams rally and Tippett RBI. The Angels came right back with two runs on three hits for the 6-2 advantage. Methodist rallied in the top of the seventh after
Sarah Stapleton led off with a triple. Lee reached on a fielder's choice that allowed her to move to second while the Angels held Stapleton at third. Tippett followed up with a double to score Lee.
Raevin Harvey came on to pinch run for Tippett and scored on
Katie Byrd's single. Meredith retired the next batter to hold on for the 6-5 win.
Tippett finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Adams went 2-for-3.
Jessica Farmer went five innings in the circle with two strikeouts while
Ashley Shingleton finished the sixth in relief.
Meredith took the early 3-0 lead in game two with three runs on three hits. Methodist came back with a run in the top of the second when Tippett led off with a double down the left field line. Harvey entered to pinch run again and moved to third on Byrd's sacrifice bunt. Harvey scored on
Ally Griffin's sacrifice fly to the move within two. The Monarchs trimmed the lead with a run in the fourth when
Megan Lee drew the lead-off walk followed by singles from McKee and Tippett to load the bases. Byrd picked up a RBI on a bases-loaded walk to score Lee. Methodist kept it going in the fifth when
Annie Zaremski drew a walk and scored on McKee's triple tie the game at three.
Neither team could break the tie in the sixth and the Monarchs came up empty in the top of the seventh. After
Kayla Malone struck out the first batter in the bottom of the seventh, Meredith's Emily Cooke blasted the walk off home run to give the Angels the 4-3 win.
Tippett went 2-for-3 at the plate while McKee finished 2-for-4 with a RBI. Malone pitched the complete game scattering nine hits with three strikeouts.
Methodist will be back in action on Friday when they host Ferrum at 1 p.m.
