ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Methodist took the 3-0 lead and held off N.C. Wesleyan to earn the 3-2 USA South win on Friday.
After three scoreless innings, Methodist took the early lead with a solo shot to left field from
Trey Such. The Monarchs added a run in the fifth after
Cody Molosky led off with a double to right center and
David Lutz sacrificed him to third.
Matt Quick hit the sacrifice fly for Molosky to score. In the sixth inning, Such was hit by a pitch to start the inning and he moved to second on
Tyler Younger's sacrifice. Such scored on
Steven Kirby's single to give Methodist the 3-0 lead.
N.C. Wesleyan countered with a home run in the seventh to cut the lead to two. In the eighth inning, the Bishops tallied a run on a wild pitch after reaching on a hit by pitch, but the Monarchs got out of the inning and retired the first three batters in the ninth to earn the 3-2 win.
Such and Lutz both finished 2-for-3 for the Monarchs.
Chris Perry pitched the complete game for the Monarchs giving up just three hits to go along with 12 strikeouts and one walk.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday for the USA South regular season finale in Rocky Mount at 2 p.m.
