Softball Draws Split with Ferrum

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team wrapped up the conference regular season on Friday with a split against Ferrum. The Monarchs won the first game 3-2 before dropping the second 10-0.

Methodist jumped out to the early lead in game one with two runs in the third inning. Annie Zaremski drew the lead off walk and moved to second on Sarah Stapleton's single down the left field line. Both runners advanced on a groundout and scored on Katie Byrd's double to the fence in right center field. The Monarchs added a run in the fifth when Zaremski led off with a single through the left side and advanced to second on Mandi Wall's sacrifice. Stapleton doubled to score Zaremski and give Methodist the 3-0 lead. Ferrum came back with two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Monarchs got out of the inning and retired the first three batters in the seventh to win 3-2.

Stapleton was 2-for-2 and Zaremski was 1-for-1 in the game. Byrd finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Jessica Farmer pitched the complete game scattering seven hits with four strikeouts.

Ferrum struck first in the second game notching a run in the second inning on two doubles. After adding two runs in the fourth, they took care of business in the fifth rattling off six hits for seven runs. The Methodist bats stalled finishing with just two hits, both from Jordan Adams. The Panthers finished with the 10-0 win in five innings.

Kayla Malone went four innings while Ashley Shingleton finished in relief.

Methodist will await the final USA South tournament seeding. They are currently tied for third with Ferrum with Christopher Newport and Meredith to finish the regular season on Saturday.
