FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist women's tennis team remains undefeated in the USA South with a 6-3 win over Christopher Newport University.
The Monarchs took the early 3-0 lead after doubles.
Stacey Brooks and
Kelli Shelton won 8-5 at number three.
Rachel Purser and
Dana Powell earned the 8-4 win at number two and
Katherine Meindl and
Laura Baker finished up with the 8-4 win at number one.
Shelton gave Methodist the 4-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number five singles.
Emily Talley lost 6-3, 6-3 at number six before Powell clinched the Monarchs' win with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win at number four. Baker won 7-5, 6-3 at number three singles. CNU took the final two singles matches in a third set tiebreaker and third set. Meindl lost 7-2, 2-6, 10-5 at number one and Purser lost 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 at number two.
The Monarchs maintain a half game lead over Meredith in the USA South Athletic Conference standings with an 8-0 record. Meredith stands at 8-1 while N.C. Wesleyan is currently in third at 7-1. The regular season championship and tournament seeding will be determined following Monday's match when Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan resume play in Rocky Mount at 3:30 p.m.
