ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - After being called due to storms last week, the women's tennis team wrapped up their match against the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Welseyan today.
In doubles play which was partially completed last week, the Bishops started strong picking up an 8-2 win over
Rachel Purser and
Dana Powell at second doubles. Methodist battled back however as Kat Meindl and
Laura Baker notched an 8-3 win at first doubles. Doubles would close out with
Kelli Shelton and
Stacey Brooks falling 8-5 at the third slot.
The Monarchs started well in singles as
Laura Baker won her match at third singles 6-0, 6-1. N.C. Wesleyan would take the next two matches however as
Rachel Purser fell 6-4, 6-1 at second and Kat Meindl lost by 6-3, 6-0 scores at first singles.
Dana Powell dropped the fourth singles match 6-2, 7-5.
Kelli Shelton came back and won 6-3, 6-3 at fifth singles before
Lauryn Justice lost her match in a third set tie-breaker with scores of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
The Methodist women earn a share of the USA South Athletic Conference regular season championship along with Meredith College and N.C. Wesleyan. WIth the three-way tie, the Monarchs received the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and will kick things off Friday when they take on No. 6 Shenandoah University in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. in Burlington, N.C.
