Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's soccer rallied from a 2-0 second-half deficit to win its fifth straight match, a 3-2 decision over Chowan, on Wednesday evening at the Monarch Soccerplex.
The Monarchs tallied all three of their goals in the second half, including the game-winning header by
Frank Barone with just over 15 minutes remaining, and moved to 7-1-0 on the season, while the Hawks fell to 0-7-0.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Kenny Moore got open near the six-yard box and put a shot past MU senior goalkeeper Pat Hamel at the 34:43 mark. In the second half, Chowan stretched its lead to 2-0 at the 47:41 mark when Dale Pearson scored off a feed from Moore.
It did not take long for the Monarchs to begin inching closer as junior
Eric McGinnis scored off a great pass from sophomore
Eirik Nordseth at the 54:46 mark to make it a 2-1 game. Almost 10 minutes later, the duo combined for the Monarchs second goal, and McGinnis' 12
th of the season, as Methodist tied the contest at 2-2 at the 64:34 mark.
Nearly 10 minutes on nose after that was when Barone was able to get a head on a ball from sophomore
Sean MacDonald and send it past CU's Grayson Smith for the game-winning tally and complete the MU comeback.
The Monarch's two-goal deficit marked the first time this season that they had trailed by more than a single goal at any point in a match.
Hamel played all the duration in goal for Methodist and made four saves, while Smith played all 90:00 as well for the Hawks and came up with nine saves as MU outshot Chowan 23-15 and racked up a total of 20 corner kicks.
The Monarchs are back at it on Saturday, traveling to Greensboro for a 4:00 pm contest.
