Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Methodist men's soccer team, playing in a pivotal USA South Conference match, fell in overtime, 3-2, at Christopher Newport on Saturday evening.

A physical game that featured 47 fouls, six cautions and an ejection ended 1:42 into the first overtime period when Denny Arinello scored off a rebound to lift CNU (7-1-2, 3-0-1 USA South) to the victory.

Methodist (7-2-1, 1-1-1 USA South) struck first and took a 1-0 lead when Eirik Nordseth got on the end of a long pass from Frank Barone and put a ball into the left side of the goal for a 1-0 lead just 4:34 into the contest.

The score remained that way until CNU knotted the contest at 1-1 in the 53rd minute when Tommy O'Neal scored of an assist from Andrew Bonorden on a set piece. Just over 12 minutes later, the Captains took their first lead of the evening, 2-1, when Jalon Brown scored unassisted from 25 yards out.

The Monarchs quickly answered, needing only 28 seconds to tie the game back up at 2-2 as Mike Ilodigwe scored off an assist from Anders Petersen at the 66:27 mark.

It appeared that Methodist caught a break when the Captains' Brendan Cook was sent off with a red card just 12 seconds into the first overtime, but CNU managed to find the game-winning goal from Arinello just 1:30 later.

CNU outshot the Monarchs, 19-4, on the evening and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, but MU goalkeeper Pat Hamel made seven saves in goal. Sean Killion made two saves in goal for the Captains.

The Monarchs return to action on Saturday when they host Kean at 12:00 pm.
