Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the 2012 season on Wednesday evening, dropping a 2-1 overtime affair to Randolph College at the Monarch Soccerplex.
The Monarchs (2-1-0) took an early 1-0 lead when freshman
Anders Petersen converted his second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore
Nahom Hargwoin at the 20:44 mark.
Under five minutes later, the WildCats (1-1-1) knotted the score at 1-1 when Celestin Kabamba, who had just recently entered the contest, found some space on the right side of goal and beat MU senior keeper Pat Hamel.
Despite dominating possession and holding a 10-5 advantage in shots in the opening period, the Monarchs were unable to find another score and settled for a 1-1 tie at the break.
In the second half, it was more of the same as MU held a 9-6 advantage in shots but was unable to find the back of the net. The best scoring chance for either team came with just over four minutes remaining in regulation when Monarch sophomore
Eirik Nordseth found Petersen alone at the top of the six-yard box, but the sophomore's chip shot was just wide of goal.
In the first overtime period, the WildCats scored the game-winning goal at the 96:23 mark when Will Wolf got on the end of Nick Cornell's corner kick and beat Hamel for the game winner.
MU finished with a 21-14 edge in shots, but Randolph's C.J. Stevens was up to the task, making 10 saves on the day. Hamel finished with five saves for Methodist.
The Monarchs return to action on Saturday at 12:00 pm when they open the Methodist Fall Classic by taking on Sewanee at 12:00 pm.
