Eric McGinnis netted two of Monarchs three first-half goals and the Methodist men's soccer team rolled to a 3-1 win over Sewanee on Saturday afternoon as part of the Methodist Fall Classic.
McGinnis started the scoring right of the opening whistle as it took him just 22 seconds to tally his first goal of the contest as he got on the end of a pass from sophomore
Eirik Nordseth and easily beat the Tigers' Jacob Zalewski for a 1-0 lead.
In the 29
th minute, McGinnis returned the favor to Nordseth, who converted his third goal of the season as the Monarchs increased their lead to 2-0.
McGinnis scored again in the 34
th minute as he converted a rebound off a header from Nordseth that was saved off the line, but right to McGinnis who found the back of a wide open net for a 3-0 MU lead going into the break.
In the second period, Sewanee cut the Monarchs lead to 3-1 in the 57
th minute on an unassisted goal by Samuel Edoung-Biyo and it stood as the only goal scored by either side in the second period.
Senior Pat Hamel posted a solid game in net for the Monarchs, yielding just the one goal and coming up with six saves. Jacob Zalewski started in goal and played the first 71:21 in goal, allowing all three goals and making four saves. Conrad Bandoroff played the final 18:39 in the net and made one save.
MU dominated offensive play, holding an 18-11 advantage in shots and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Monarchs return to action on Sunday as they host Birmingham-Southern at 12:00 pm.
