Methodist Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Ferrum, 3-0, as McGinnis Sets Record

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Having already clinched the regular-season USA South title on Sunday, the Methodist men's soccer team finished with a 3-0 victory over visiting Ferrum on Wednesday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex. During the match, MU senior Eric McGinnis became the program's all-time leader in assists with 31, breaking Fernando Martinez's mark of 30. The record-breaker came on Sean MacDonald's goal in 41st minute.
 
Earlier in the game, McGinnis also assisted on Chris Ryan's score, which came on a direct kick from six yards out at the 36:58 mark. The goal came after a yellow card was called on Ferrum goalkeeper Justin Robinson. The Monarchs left the pitch at halftime ahead, 2-0.
 
To complete Methodist's offensive output for the day, McGinnis scored an unassisted goal on a direct kick in the 61st minute.
 
By the end of the game, MU (9-6-2, 7-1-1 USA South) owned an 18-3 edge over FC (12-7-0, 5-4-0 USA South) in shots.
 
Methodist goalkeeper Nick Martens earned the victory and his sixth shutout this fall. Ferrum's Robinson took the loss, making two saves. He was relieved by Keegan Fairchild in the 69th minute.
 
Methodist will host begin the USA South Tournament on Saturday. The top-seeded Monarchs, looking for a repeat trip to the NCAA Tournament, will host a quarterfinal match on Saturday versus No. 8 seed Piedmont at 2:30 pm
