Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Keyed by
Nahom Hargwoin's record-setting performance, the top-seeded Methodist men's soccer team rolled to a 5-0 victory over No. 8 seed Piedmont in a USA South Tournament quarterfinal match on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex.
Entering the day with two goals to his credit this season, Hargwoin scored four straight times in the span of less than 15 minutes during the first half, eclipsing the previous conference tournament single-game mark of three goals, most recently accomplished by teammate
Eirik Nordseth.
Hargwoin began his scoring spree by fielding a pass from
Eric McGinnis and finding the back of the net at the 14:29 mark. On the next goal, Hargwoin gathered in a ball played to him by
Mike Ilodigwe and chipped the ball in from roughly 18 yards out. His third score was an unassisted goal at the 18:14 mark. Already with a hat trick to his credit, Hargwoin took a pass from
Seth Harrison and converted, shattering the tournament single-game goals mark.
Led by his individual scoring barrage, MU (10-6-2) held a 4-0 lead over PC (6-12-0) by the 29th minute. To cap the day's scoring,
David Korneliusson added a goal in the 45th minute.
The Monarchs held a 27-3 edge over the Lions in terms of shots.
Methodist goalkeeper
Nick Martens earned his seventh shutout of the season, making a single save. Piedmont's Kenneth Hearn took the loss, allowing all five goals and stopping seven shots.
The Monarchs will face No. 5 seed Averett on Friday at 5:00 pm in Martinsville, Va.
