Hawks Clip Monarchs, 6-1, in Baseball

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Huntingdon College scored five runs over the first three innings and limited the Methodist baseball team to just five hits in posting a 6-1 win on Saturday evening.
 
The Monarchs (8-15) collected two of their five hits in the first inning as Travis Johnson and Brandon Thigpen hit back-to-back one out singles to put runners on the corners. Chris Power followed with a fielder's choice that saw Thigpen retired at second base, but allowed Johnson to score to make it 1-0.
 
The Hawks countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Huntingdon loaded the bases on MU's Michael Inman on a single and a pair of hit batsmen. Trey Smith then walked to force in a run and tie the game at 1-1. Austin White made it 2-1 with a sacrifice fly and a pair of MU errors on a groundball hit by Evan Agnew allowed Joseph Odom to score and make it 3-1.
 
Odom homered to lead off the third inning and Agnew added an RBI single in the frame as HC's lead grew to 5-1. The Hawks would add a final run in the sixth inning as they completed the two-game sweep.
 
Inman took the loss for the Monarchs, he allowed six runs (5 ER) on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Daniel Royer and Mikie Morrison combined to toss 3.0 innings of scoreless relief.
 
Gavin Free earned the win for the Hawks as he allowed a single run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
 
For the Monarchs, Thigpen finished 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Cody Molosky was 1-for-3 with a double and Travis Johnson finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
 
Jordan Freeman was 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Hawks. Grant Brown finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and Odom was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
 
The Monarchs are back in action on Tuesday when they play at Virginia Wesleyan at 3:00 pm.
