Methodist Softball Splits Doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Methodist softball team split a doubleheader on the final day of the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast hosted by Virginia Wesleyan. The Monarchs defeated Shenandoah, 4-3, and fell to Salisbury, 5-0.
 
Salisbury's Rachel Johnson limited the Monarchs to just two hits as she recorded a complete-game shutout. In addition to the two hits she gave up, she walked three and struck out 10. Jessica Farmer took the loss for the Monarchs. She gave up three runs (1 ER) on six hits and a walk in 4.2 innings. Brittany Miller pitched the final 2.1 innings for Methodist, surrendering two runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout.
 
Farmer held the Seagulls off the scoreboard until the fifth inning, when SU collected three runs, all with two outs, to take a 3-0 lead. Sarah Alpaugh began the scoring with a two-out RBI single for the game's first run. Following an MU fielding error that kept the inning alive, SU followed with back-to-back base hits by Hannah Mills and Katie Sebbane that brought in two more runs before the Monarchs were able to escape the inning.
 
SU made it a 4-0 game in the sixth inning on Harley Hill's RBI single and Michelle Gravdahl blasted a solo home run in the seventh inning to cap the scoring.
 
Ally Griffin and Kelsey Harrington each singled for the Monarchs' only hits of the day.
 
Hill, Gravdahl and Sebbane all had two base hits for Salisbury, as the trio combined to go 6-for-11 at the plate.
 
Stats were not immediately available from the game against Shenandoah.
 
Methodist will next play on Friday as it begins play in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. The Monarchs will take on St. John's Fisher at 3:00 pm.
