Meredith Stymies Monarch Softball in Doubleheader Sweep

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College swept a softball doubleheader from Methodist on Saturday afternoon at Meredith Field. The Avenging Angels took game one, 7-4, and then captured a 5-1 win in game two.
 
Methodist is now 13-13 on the season and 4-4 in the USA South, while Meredith improves to 8-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
 
In game one, the Avenging Angels turned a 2-1 deficit into a 7-2 lead with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Monarchs had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Ally Griffin doubled in Heather Williams and Lindsay Tippett, who had both walked and advanced on a passed ball.
 
Meredith came back with one run in the bottom of the inning on Amanda White's RBI single to make it a 2-1 contest.
 
In the fourth inning, White led off with a single and moved to third on Lorri Cole's double. After Sara Cranford popped up for the first out, Alex Warren singled in White and Amanda Beirne plated a pair of runs with a two-out single for a 4-2 lead.
 
The Avenging Angels struck for three more runs in the fifth inning on Coles' RBI double and a two-run single from Warren to increase their lead to 7-2.
 
The Monarchs added two runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Tippett and Griffin before Brittany Miller struck out with the bases loaded to end the threat.
 
Jessica Farmer took the loss for Methodist, giving up seven runs on 11 hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Nicole Heinrich pitched the final 1.1 innings. She did not allow a baserunner and struck out one.
 
Beirne picked up the win, allowing four runs (3 ER) on eight hits and seven walks with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
 
Griffin was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Methodist at the plate. Tippett was 2-for-3 with and RBI and a run scored and Williams walked and scored twice.
 
White was 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI for Meredith. Cole finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
 
In the nightcap, Beirne held the Monarchs to just three hits in posting her second win on the day. The gave up just one run with two walks and seven strikeouts.
 
Meredith took a 2-0 lead with single runs in both the first and second innings. Warren singled in White for the game's first run, and in the second it was Cole drawing a bases-loaded walk for a 2-0 lead.
 
Methodist made it 2-1 in the third as Tippett's RBI single brought home Williams, but the Monarchs were held hitless the rest of the way as the Avenging Angels picked up the sweep.
 
Miller took the loss for Methodist. She gave up three two runs (1 ER) on seven hits and two walks in 3.0 innings. Heinrich pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Williams, Tippett and Miller all singled for the Monarchs.
 
White, Cole, Warren and Beirne all had two hits for Meredith. Cranford finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
 
The Monarchs, who have postponed Sunday's doubleheader with Peace until April 1, are back in action on Tuesday when they host Averett in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 pm.
