Methodist Baseball Stumbles at Averett, 8-4

Box Score DANVILLE, Va. -- The Averett Cougars scored in each of the first four innings in an 8-4 win over the Methodist baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field on.
 
Averett (22-12, 12-9 USA South) tallied single runs in each of the first two innings, before scoring four in the third and one more in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead en route to a win in the series rubber match. Tied 2-2 entering the bottom of the third, AU took the lead for good with four runs in the frame. The Cougars loaded the bases with no outs on back-to-back walks followed by a bunt single by Cody Moore. Jason Carter made it 3-2 with a sacrifice fly to center and Cliff Hodges sacrifice bunt drove in a run to make it 4-2 with two outs. Zach Boraski added an RBI double and Chatham Currie beat out a bunt single to push Averett's lead to 6-2.
 
Each team tallied two more runs down the stretch, Methodist scoring on Alex Rodriguez's sacrifice fly in the sixth and Steven Kirby's RBI fielder's choice in the eighth for the 8-4 final.
 
Aaron O'Neill took the loss for the Monarchs, allowing six runs (5 ER) on seven hits and four walks in 2.2 innings. Michael Judge threw 5.0 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three this and two walks with three strikeouts. Andrew Kirks earned the win for Averett. He yielded four runs on 12 hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
 
Ronnie Hatfield was 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Monarchs. Kirby finished 2-for-5 with a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI, and Brandon Thigpen was 2-for-4 with a walk and stolen base. Cody Molosky contributed two hits in three at bats with a walk.
 
Jimbo Newcombe was 3-for-5 with a run scored for Averett. Moore and Boraksi each had two base hits and Kevin Alvarez walked three times and scored twice.
 
Methodist is back on the field on Wednesday when it plays at Lynchburg at 3:30 pm.
