Box Score ASHLAND, Va. -- Randolph-Macon scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out a 5-2 win over the Methodist baseball team on Tuesday afternoon.
Tied at 2-2 after the top of the eighth, the Yellow Jackets' Michael Trentham reached on an error to lead off the inning and Travis Lodge then sacrificed him to second with a bunt. Jeb Weymouth was intentionally walked to set up a potential double play with one out, but Tim Benjamin foiled the plan with a double to right that scored a pair of runs and gave R-MC a 4-2 lead. Jon Witt then hit a fly ball to center allowed Benjamin to move up 90 feet and he would then make the score 5-2 in favor of the home team when he scored on a wild pitch.
Will Jennings pitched a perfect ninth for Randolph-Macon to preserve the win.
R-MC had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Nate Meiners' RBI single that plated Benjamin. MU (7-10) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning on a
Tyler Younger RBI single, before the Yellow Jackets took back the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the frame on Benjamin's RBI double to left center.
The Monarchs came back to tie the game once again (2-2) in the sixth inning. With one out,
Chris Power and
Brandon Thigpen reach on back-to-back errors putting runners at the corners. Younger hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Younger and tie the game before a fielder's choice ended the inning.
Chris Barger started for Methodist and earned a no decision. He allowed two runs on nine hits and four walks with a strikeout in 5.0 innings.
Mikie Morrison was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs (1 ER) on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief.
Glenn McLaughlin picked up the win with 1.0 innings in relief of Matt Fischgrund. McLaughlin allowed just one hit in his one inning of work. Fischgrund allowed two runs (1 ER) on five hits and no walks with one strikeout in 7.0 strong innings.
Cody Molosky finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base for Methodist. Younger was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, Power and
Travis Johnson each added a base hit and a run scored for the Monarchs.
Benjamin led the Yellow Jackets, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, three RBIs and two runs scored. Weymouth finished 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored and Meiners was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Methodist returns to the field on Friday when the it opens a three-game set with Piedmont at Armstrong-Shelley field at 6:00 pm.
