Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --
Tyler Younger's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Methodist baseball team to a 4-3 win over Piedmont on Saturday afternoon at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
With two outs in the 10th and the game tied at 3-3, Thigpen, who nearly ended the game with a solo home run that sailed just foul down the right field line, walked and then moved up to second on
Chris Power's single through the left side. That brought up Younger, who dumped a single into right. Thigpen raced around from second and slid in with the game-winning run just under the tag of Piedmont's James Moyer.
The Monarchs received a lucky break in the top of the 10th when Kevin D'Antignac's hard-hit ball to left trickled under the fence resulting in a ground-rule double and preventing Casey Parham from scoring on the play. MU's
Josh Ayers then struck out Moyer to end the inning and set up Younger's heroics.
The win snapped a six-game losing streak for Methodist as the Monarchs improved to 8-11 on the season and 5-9 in the USA South. Piedmont falls to 10-8 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
The Lions had tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning when Keith Grabowski's two-out single to left plated Austin Brick with the tying run.
Both teams scored in the first inning. Piedmont took an early 1-0 lead on Logan Pethel's single that drove in Grabowski and Methodist promptly answered in the bottom of the inning on Power's single up the middle that scored
Steven Kirby.
Piedmont regained the lead in the third inning (2-1) when Josh Bailey drove in Grabowski with a single. Methodist answered again, this time in the fourth inning on
Travis Johnson's RBI single to left that saw
Cody Molosky come in to score and tie the game at 2-2. The Monarchs took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning when Molosky singled to center field to bring in Will Sutton.
The Lion's rally in the ninth inning spoiled a strong start from MU's
Michael Inman, who was in position for his first win of the season. Inman allowed three runs on nine hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 8.1 innings. Ayers picked up the win (2-1) with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Chris Goershel started for PC and earned a no decision. He allowed three runs (2 ER) on nine hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Allen Tokarz took the loss (3-2). He surrendered one run on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Molosky finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI to lead Methodist. Power and Younger both finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and Johnson was 2-for-5 with a run driven in.
Grabowski finished a perfect 3-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI for Piedmont. Bailey and Pethel were both 2-for-5 with an RBI and D'Antignac had two hits in five at bats.
The two teams will play a rubber match to conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
