ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to top-seeded Ferrum on the final day of the USA South Softball Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.
Methodist committed six errors in the contest as all four Panther runs were unearned, and Ferrum's duo of Kaitlyn Culler and Rachel Shumaker limited the Monarchs to four hits on the day.
After the Panthers scored the game's first run for a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, Methodist came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame.
Heather Williams singled with two outs and moved to second when
Ally Griffin was hit by a pitch. A passed ball moved the runners up to second and third and Williams then came in to score on a wild pitch and tie the game.
However, the Panthers answered with unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings to assume a 3-1 lead before adding an insurance run in the seventh inning to account for the final score.
Jessica Farmer was a hard-luck loser for the Monarchs. She allowed four runs, all unearned, on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Kaitlyn Culler picked up the win, surrendering one unearned run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
