ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Methodist women's tennis team fended off a game Christopher Newport squad, 5-4, to win its sixth USA South tournament championship and earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
After falling behind, 2-1, after doubles the Monarchs bounced back to win four of the six singles matches. Kat Meindl clinched the win for Methodist at No. 1 singles, winning an epic match, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) over Kim Morrissett in the day's final match. Morrissett and Marion Gloor had defeated Meindl and Baker, 9-8 (7-4) at No. 1 doubles earlier in the day.
Meindl was named the Tournament MVP for her efforts and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Baker and
Kelli Shelton.
With the win, the Monarchs will now await word on their opponent in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
