Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. -- Emory scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out a 3-1 win over the Methodist baseball team on Saturday afternoon.
The Monarchs fell to 21-20 on the season while the Eagles improved to 20-14 overall.
Emory's eighth-inning rally spoiled a strong start from MU's
Michael Inman, who tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Josh Ayers (4-2) took the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits and a walk in 1.0 innings.
Inman was in line to get the win as Methodist had taken a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning when
Steven Kirby singled to right field to drive in
Alex Rodriguez, who had walked an moved to third on a single and a sacrifice bunt.
After Inman kept Emory off the scoreboard in the seventh, Ayers relieved him in the eighth as the Eagles rallied. Jared Kahn singled with one out and moved to second when Daniel Iturrey walked. After and infield fly gave the Monarchs two outs, Chris Slivka tied the game at 1-1 with a single to left center that plated Kahn. Both Slivka and Iturrey moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and Ben Vizvary promptly doubled home the go-ahead runs to put Emory on top 3-1.
Graham Bloomsmith came on in the ninth for Emory and struck out the side to nail down the save. Paul Merolla picked up the win with 8.0 solid innings of his own. He gave up one run on only three hits. He walked three and struck out three in improving to 5-1 on the season.
Cody Molosky finished 1-for-3 at the plate for Methodist and Kirby was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Rodriguez was 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored.
For Emory, Iturrey was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored and Vizary finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
The two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm.
